When some hear the term open-plan, they imagine large living spaces. However, in reality, this is not the case, and most often open-plan spaces use a multiple purpose plan to make the most of smaller spaces. If you are looking to create your open-plan living space, here are some important points to consider.

Define each purpose – Most often an open-plan space will include a kitchen, dining room, living room and maybe a study. Since open-plan spaces don’t have walls that define each space use furniture that clearly relates to the task.

Be clever with your furniture – To define your spaces further, invest in a modular sofa that clearly defines the living space. Then invest in a dining table that fills the space allocated for the dining room and section the kitchen using an island bench top.

Use color – Open-plan spaces need to have basic color schemes in white or light neutrals to ensure the space has cohesion and flow. Since open-plan spaces are often small, neutral light shades will also give the illusion of space.

Borders – Borders can be further defined by using furniture like bookshelves, sofas and console tables, that will separate each space.

Be cohesive – Your entire space, should always be cohesive and tell the same story. Achieve this by using common themes, colors, and textures that flow through the entire space.
