Summary: Instead of throwing away your old mattress, you can freshen it up with these methods.

There are a number of studies that show the average human spends about a third of each day in bed. The condition of your mattress dictates how well you sleep and how you feel the morning after. Changing your mattress every time you wake up feeling sore isn’t exactly the most cost-effective way to get a good night’s rest. Mattresses are known to be quite expensive so you want to ensure that you maintain them as well as you can to increase their longevity.

How to Keep Them Fresh

The natural warmth of the sun isn’t just great for your body and mind, but it can also freshen up your mattress. Take your mattress outside and let it air out in the sun for a few hours. Sure, it might be a bit tedious due to the overall weight of it, but direct sunlight can act as a natural decontaminant. Be careful not to forget it outside or bugs and other unwanted critters might find a new home in there.

Another option you have is to deodorize your mattress by sprinkling baking soda all over it. It’s a simple and inexpensive way to obtain that fresh feeling that you once had when you first purchase your mattress. Or, you can but some dryer sheets and place them under your fitted sheet for a temporary boost of freshness.

Don’t Forget the Stains

If you’ve accidently spilled a drink or something that stains, be sure to get to them quickly. Remove the sheets immediately and blot up the liquid as soon as the spill occurs. Then, take an absorbent towel and push on the stain so you can soak up the liquid before it leaves behind a ghastly print. Be sure that you do not blot and rub as it’ll end up making the stain look worse.
